CRAFTS

Sewing is my first love - patchwork and quilting my second.

I grew up with a wealth of talented and creative women all around me.  My paternal grandmother was a marvel and could turn her hand to most things.  Knitting, crochet, rug making - to name just a few - on the creative side, and such a whizz in the kitchen.  She would make most meals from scratch using ingredients to hand - as it had always been, a young woman and wife herself living through World War II.  From bread to ice cream and 'the most' fully cooked English breakfast you could ever dream of.  I always remember with such fondness her morning ritual of scooping up the tablecloth and giving it a good old shake out the back door - pinny tied tightly around her waist - for the birds.

I'm told my maternal grandmother had a love for embroidery and such an amazing way with her creativity and work.

My mother taught me most things from a very young age.  Starting off with winding yarn around cardboard cut out circles making pompoms and funny dangly things with french knitting.  She would also make rag dolls as presents for me and my sisters and all my cousins - almost like the Clothkits dolls you can now buy and make today.

With age I learnt how to knit - very basically - my Sindy doll scarves were legendary! And more recently my mother taught me how to crochet - again very basic as it was my paternal grandmother that had taught her in her late teens.

Growing up I had full access to the kitchen and would spend countless Saturday afternoons making fairy cakes and peppermint creams, but my most favourite of memories was going blackberry picking - foraging at a very early age - and then turning those blackberries into delicious pies.

And now a mother and wife myself - I'm trying very hard to pass on these traditions.  A very basic, but most rewarding way of living.
